Diabetes

 

  • What is it?
    • A disease that occurs when a person’s body doesn’t make enough insulin or can’t use insulin properly.  It can’t be cured.
    • Diabetes is the 6th leading cause of death in the United States.
  • Symptoms?
    • Frequent urination
    • Excessive thirst
    • Unexplained weight loss
    • Extreme hunger
    • Sudden vision changes
    • Tingling or numbness in hands or feet.
  • Treatment?
    • Healthy eating
    • Physical activity
    • Maintain a healthy weight
    • Take your medicines if needed
  • Prevention?
    • Studies have shown that regular physical activity can significantly reduce the risk of developing diabetes.
    • Health care providers can conduct a Fasting Plasma Glucose Test or an Oral Glucose Tolerance Test to diagnose pre-diabetes.
    • Control weight to normal levels by eating a healthy low-fat, high-fiber diet.
    • Keep alcohol consumption low and Quit smoking.
  • Who’s affected by it?
    • Diabetes is more common in African Americans, Latinos, Native Americans, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.
    • People who have a family history of diabetes.
    • People who are physically inactive and obese.
