Hypertension

 

  • What is it?
    • High blood pressure
    • High blood pressure (or hypertension) is defined in an adult as a blood pressure greater than or equal to 140 mm Hg systolic pressure or greater than or equal to 90 mm Hg diastolic pressure
  • Symptoms?
    • most often, no symptoms
    • headaches
    • dizziness
    • blurred vision
    • low libido or lack of sexual desire
  • Treatment?
    • For many people, exercise and making healthier food choices are helpful, but not enough to get them into the BP Success Zone (less than 140/90 to 120/80 mm Hg or below)#. There are many different blood pressure medications that can help.
  • Prevention?
    • Lifestyle changes may help control your blood pressure:
    • Lose weight if you are overweight. Excess weight adds to strain on the heart. In some cases, weight loss may be the only treatment needed.
    • Exercise regularly.
    • Eat a healthy diet. Eat less fat and sodium. Salt, MSG, and baking soda all contain sodium. Eat more fruits, vegetables, and fiber.
    • Avoid smoking.
    • If you have diabetes, keep your blood sugar under control.
  • Who’s Affected by it?
    • People with blood relatives who have high blood pressure.
    • People who are obese
    • Men over the age of 55
    • Women over the age of 65
